The Operations


Established in March 2011, AVG PERFURAÇÕES & SONDAGENS was created to meet the growing demand of the Brazilian Market for technical drilling, in particular Raiseboring.


We brought the state-of-art technolgy and the best equipment to better serve the Brazilian Market, whose scope is focused in large diameter (Ø3m and above) and low angle (dow to 45°). Another important fact we took into account for the selection of our equipment was the hardness of the rock formation in Brazil, which can be classified as "very hard" in most applications (over 200MPa).


With a capacity of 6,000m per year, we rely on mordern equipment and latest technolgy to surpass the expectation of Brazilian Market.

The Raiseboring Machines


AVG decides to bring to Brazil the State-of-Art Raiseboring Technology available in the world market. We selected machines with hydraulic drives and proven performance in application similar to Brazilian ones.


Raiseboring machines with hydraulic drives have the following advantages when compared with machines with electric drives:


Safety: The hydraulic drive allows full control on rotation speed and reverse, making the pipe handling and maneuver much safer, eliminating the need of electrical cables connected to moving parts of the machine.


Efficiency: The hydraulic drive allow full control on torque, even in very low rotation speed. That allows process such as drill pipe torque make up and reamer hook up to be performed with great accuracy.


Availability: Machines with hydraulic drives have much softer start up and do not transmit impact to its moving parts, such as gears, bearings, pinions. That is directed translated to less failures of those components.


Mobility: The machines with hydraulic drives are much shorter than the ones with electrical motors, which makes them ideal for underground applications (less excavation) and dip angles.

The Customers

Our efficiency and sympathy fascinated Customer such as Anglogold Ashanti, Yamana, Caraíba and Jaguar Mining (MSOL).

International Exposure



The Raiseboring Technology got worldwide exposure on August 22nd, 2010, when 33 miners were found alive in San Jose Mine (Chile), after being trapped for 17 days.


Then began a complex operation to rescue those miners, trapped underground at almost 700m deep.


The first rescue plan was initiated with a Raiseboring Machine, XTRATA model 950, which would "dig" a hole of ø66cm diameter, from surface down to where the miners were confined.

The 950 XTRATA Machine was on international news for few days.


But no everybody knows that despite the Raiseboring Machine media exposure, the hole that was effectively used to rescue the miners were "dug" by another machine: a DRILL T130 (normally used to drill deep water wells).

How Raiseboring Technology works



The Raiseboring Technology was developed to meet the demands of underground mining industry. To allow underground mines to go deeper and mechanized, it was necessary to excavate ventilation shafts, scape ways, gage shafts and ore passes.


Only one generation ago, all this excavation work was done manually, using charge and blasting methods (explosives): A extremely high-risk operation that demanded expert miners to "enter" in the hole being excavated to drill and blast.


It is possible to figure out the risk involved in such a hostile environment, which combine excessive heat, confined spaces, poor ventilation, insufficient illumination with explosive handling.


The excavation of a shaft using Raiseboring Technology starts with the machine being set up in a upper level, to which the lower level must be "connected".


The Raiseborer then starts drilling what so called "pilot hole" (usually between 9 and 15" in diameter) until it intersects the lower level. At this stage, the pilot bit used to drill de pilot hole is removed and a reaming head is connected to the drill string. The reaming head has the same diameter of the shaft to be excavated.


The Machine then starts rotating the reaming head, while hydraulic cylinders pulls to agains the face of the rock. The compression of the reaming head against the rock (total trust) might exceed 500 tons, which promotes the excavation of the rock. The chips (excavated material) are removed from the lower level using underground loaders (LHD)

The Raiseboring History


When James Robbins built the first Raiseboring Machine back in 1962 (Robbins 41R), he certainly did not imagine that his creation could spread so quickly and that Raiseborers would be present in almost all modern underground mines in the world.


In the Picture is presented the first Raiseboring Machine ever built, model 41R. Records from 2008 indicate that a 41R was still operation in Morocco (Source: Atlas Copco).


It is estimated that over 35 models and 600 Raiseboring machines have been manufactured worldwide since then. Nowadays, the modern Raiseboring Machines can excavate shafts over 1,000m long and up to ø7.5m in diameter.


From hydropower stations to diversion of rivers, from tunnel ventilation to drainage systems, the Raiseboring Technology also found several applications in Heavy Civil Construction Industry.


The success of Raiseboring Technology can be easily explained by its benefits. Namely:




With Raiseboring Machines, miners do not have to "enter" the shafts during excavation process, eliminating risks such as loose rocks, confined space, lack of ventilation, explosive handling, among others.



Using manual excavating methods (drilling & blasting), the execution of a 100m shaft and ø3.0m in diameter was a task to be performed over several months, exposing over 20 employees to a hostile environment inside the hole. With Raiseboring Technology the very same shaft can be excavated in 4 to 5 weeks, employing less than 12 Collaborators, all working "outside" of the hole, in much safer conditions.



As Raiseboring Technology does not use explosive, the walls of the hole are much more homogeneous and stable, providing minimal resistance to air (ventilation) or ore (ore passes) flow.

The high capital cost involved and labor expertise required to run a successful Raiseboring Operation led to a high level of outsourcing of such service. There are few large companies specialized in providing Raiseboring Services around the world.


Among the 200 largest Brazilian Mining Operations, there are already 18 underground mines, extracting commodities such as gold, zinc, copper and even limestone, as shown in Table 01.


All those mines already used or will use Raiseboring Technology for excavation of ventilation shafts and scape way.

    1,345m long shaft of 5.5m diameter, executed using Survey and Path Teconology Control (MWD, RSS & DHM)



    AVG performes down reaming shaft of 70m length and 0.85m diameter. Scope performed in 12 days only.



    CHALLENGER is performing a 218m long shaft in Corrego do Sitio (CDS), AngloGold Ashanti. Pilot hole hit the target (no deviation).

    AVG donates over 500 tree seedlings and participates of plantation in Square, with IEF and Group of Walkers Estrada Real.



    After several months in Jacobina (BA), ENTERPRISE is comissioned in Turmalina Mine (MG), for a 30 months contract.



    ATLANTIS executed 03 ventilation shafts in Pilar de Goiás in 64 days (total lenght of 321m).
